Staffing & patrols

Follow proposals for staffing and patrols, the City’s cost estimates, and the distinction between adding personnel and replacing a barrier.

Staffing was discussed at several meetings

City staff examined cost and practical coverage. They treated human presence as something that could accompany a physical barrier, while repeatedly advising against relying on staffing to replace it.

Around-the-clock staffing was proposed

Councilmember Tyron Hampton proposed staffing the bridge 24 hours a day. City Manager Steve Mermell said it had been suggested before, would likely cost several hundred thousand dollars annually, and was not feasible as a replacement. Mayor Victor Gordo proposed a model based on Old Pasadena’s hosts and guides: personnel who could observe, report concerns, and offer historical information.
